Peer Review Process

All articles submitted to BJOHNS will be screened for proper formatting. All correctly formatted submissions will be subjected to a double-blinded peer review process. Usually, each submission is sent to two reviewers by the Editors but the final decision is at the sole discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

The reviewers send in suggestions for acceptance, denial or corrections through the system itself and the same is conveyed to the corresponding authors. The authors submit the corrected manuscripts, if required, and they are sent for subsequent rounds of peer review by the same reviewers. The Editors are allowed to add suggestions during the review process to help the authors as well as the reviewers. The articles are only published if they are accepted by both the reviewers. In case of a difference in opinion, the final decision is taken by the Editor-in-Chief.

The typical time taken to conduct the review process is approximately six months. Authors may follow the status of their submission online through the BJOHNS website.

Publication Frequency

BJOHNS will be published thrice a year - January to April (in April), May to August (in August) and September to December (in December).

Corrections, Retraction and Editorial Expressions of Concern Policy

We strictly follow the COPE guidelines available at https://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines

It states that:

"Journal editors should consider retracting a publication if:
• they have clear evidence that the findings are unreliable, either as a result of misconduct (e.g. data fabrication)
or honest error (e.g. miscalculation or experimental error)
• the findings have previously been published elsewhere without proper crossreferencing, permission or
justification (i.e. cases of redundant publication)
• it constitutes plagiarism
• it reports unethical research
Journal editors should consider issuing an expression of concern if:
• they receive inconclusive evidence of research or publication misconduct by the authors
• there is evidence that the findings are unreliable but the authors’ institution will not investigate the case
• they believe that an investigation into alleged misconduct related to the publication either has not been,
or would not be, fair and impartial or conclusive
• an investigation is underway but a judgement will not be available for a considerable time
Journal editors should consider issuing a correction if:
• a small portion of an otherwise reliable publication proves to be misleading (especially because of honest
error)
• the author / contributor list is incorrect (i.e. a deserving author has been omitted or somebody who does
not meet authorship criteria has been included)
Retractions are not usually appropriate if:
• a change of authorship is required but there is no reason to doubt the validity of the findings
Notices of retraction should:
• be linked to the retracted article wherever possible (i.e. in all electronic versions)
• clearly identify the retracted article (e.g. by including the title and authors in the retraction heading)
• be clearly identified as a retraction (i.e. distinct from other types of correction or comment)
• be published promptly to minimize harmful effects from misleading publications"

In addition, author(s) found guilty of serious misconduct may be banned from further publication in the journal for a period of time to be decided by the Editorial Board. The decision of the board would be final in all such cases. Any legal dispute would be considered under the jurisdiction of Kolkata (India) courts only.
